Volunteer Information

District 6 is a combination department, with Career personnel and Volunteer personnel working together to provide outstanding service to the citizens we protect.

If you have a desire to become involved with District 6 as a Volunteer, applications are accepted all through the year. Applications are reviewed twice a year to determine if the applicant fits the needs of the district and lives within the district's boundaries. Letters are then sent out to qualified applicants informing them of the time and place scheduled for the Volunteer Firefighter Examination.

The examination process consists of:
  • A written test - minimum passing is 75%
  • A physical ability test - pass/fail
  • An interview
  • Medical/Background Check
The interview takes place before the Volunteer Review Board, which is made up of a Chief Officer, a Volunteer Firefighter, and a Career Firefighter selected by IAFF Local 1805. Medical checks are done by a local medical clinic, and background checks are done by the Washington State Patrol.

Following this process, the successful Volunteer Firefighter Candidate begins orientation and basic training in the Volunteer Recruit Academy. District 6 provides all necessary personal protective equipment and alerting devices. These remain the property of the district. Because of the cost of equipment and training, District 6 expects at least a two (2) year commitment from Volunteers.

Medical insurance is carried by the District to cover fire department related injuries, and a group life insurance program is also provided. Washington State has an outstanding pension program available and the District pays all of the cost along with an additional Accident and Disability policy.

Volunteers are reimbursed for expenses associated with their service to the District at the rate of $7.00 per call or drill attended. For involvement in major events or drills the Volunteer receives a $42.00 stipend. An $8,000 annual cap on reimbursement has been set by the Board of Commissioners. Points are also earned through involvement in the Volunteer Program that can be redeemed for District clothing or personal equipment at the Company Store.
