We’ve had four heat lamp-related fires in the last few weeks in Southwest Washington. It’s a common issue this time of the year, when it’s still chilly at night and folks are trying to keep it warm for their critters–especially newborns. Hypothermia is a real threat to chicks, kids, and other animals who are commonly born in the spring. So, if you need to use a heat lamp, here are a few safety tips:
- Keep lamps away from bedding
- Check lamps for frayed wires
- Use heat lamp cages
- Double secure lamps
- Keep wires out of reach
- Clean up cobwebs, dust, and debris
The good news is that warmer weather is on it’s way!
